How to pour a wine
The Art of the Pour: A Butler’s Guide to Professional Wine Service
In South Africa, wine is more than just a drink; it is a culture, a conversation, and a craft. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner in Constantia or a sunset gathering in the Winelands, the way you serve your wine speaks volumes about your appreciation for the vintage.
At Bellan, we believe in “Butler-Style” standards—infusing your daily life with luxury, elegance, and exceptional value. Today, we are sharing the professional secrets to a flawless wine service that will transform your next gathering.

Vidoe Tutorial
Phase 1: The Presentation and Preparation
Professional wine service begins long before the cork is pulled. It is about the ritual and the respect shown to the bottle.
- The Butler’s Touch
Before touching the bottle, don your Bellan Professional Butler Service Gloves. This is not just for aesthetics; high-quality cotton gloves prevent fingerprints from smudging the glass and ensure a non-slip grip. It signals to your guests that their experience is being handled with the utmost care.

2.The Temperature Check
Ensure your reds are at “cellar temperature” (15-18°C) and whites are appropriately chilled.
3.With white gloves properly worn, use a dedicated wine service napkin to polish each glass, ensuring that the appropriate glassware is selected and maintained in a pristine, spotless condition.

Phase 3: The Masterful Pour
Now comes the moment of truth. Following these steps ensures elegance and zero spills.
The Service Napkin (The Lite Cloth)
Drape a white service napkin over your arm or hold it in your non-pouring hand. This is your “safety net” for any stray drops.
The Pouring Technique
Position: Stand to the right of the guest.
The Grip: Hold the bottle towards the base, ensuring the label is clearly visible to the guest.
The Flow: Pour slowly into the center of the glass. Aim for the widest part of the glass (usually 125ml to 150ml) to allow the wine to breathe.
The “Butler Twist”: As you finish the pour, slightly rotate the bottle and lift it upward. This “twist” catches the last drop and prevents it from running down the side.
